Championships 2006
Students
from the South Hams Taekwon-do clubs took part in the first
Professional Unification of Martial Arts (PUMA) Southern
Championships held at Torbay Leisure Centre on Saturday.
The 25 students from Lesley McGhie’s schools took home
an impressive 24 medals between them.
The students
knew they were going to do well when the results were given
for the very first 5 event rings of the day, as 4 out of
the 5 gold positions were won by South Hams juniors and
Little PUMA’s TM (the 4-6 yr old martial art programme).
Events included traditional patterns, sparring, junior high
kicking, junior blocking, adult destruction and bo-staff
patterns. The South Hams students took medals in all of the
events making the competition an all round success for the
club.

Darren Luker: Gold, junior high kick.
Martin Luker: Gold, junior black belt sparring.
Hannah Henderson: entered junior high kick and junior patterns.
Daniel Henderson: Gold, junior red belt patterns.
Tamzin Dawkins: Gold, ladies red belt patterns, gold, ladies
blue/red tiles destruction.
Leah Bell: entered junior high kick
Sam Osborn:
bronze, Little PUMA™ patterns.
Charlie Osborn: entered junior white belt patterns and junior
high kick.
Corinne Ellis: silver, ladies yellow/green sparring.
Bob Janes: Gold, mens blue/red board destruction; gold,
mens blue/red tiles destruction; gold, mens blue/red brick
destruction.
Claire Roughley: bronze, ladies black belt sparring.
Kiera James: entered junior white belt patterns and junior
high kick.
Cameron Hard: entered junior yellow belt patterns and junior
high kick.
Ben Beer: entered junior green belt sparring.
Liberty Daly: entered junior high kick.

Sophie Barnett: Bronze, ladies blue belt patterns.
Sam Barnett: Gold, junior blue belt patterns; gold, junior
high kick.

Barnett: Gold, Little PUMA™ patterns.
Medea Creed: Gold, ladies blue belt patterns; gold, ladies
blue/red tiles destruction; silver, ladies blue/red sparring.
Corinne Sriwadada: bronze, ladies black belt patterns; bronze,
ladies black belt sparring; bronze, ladies black belt bo-staff.
Roxanne Winzer: silver, junior black belt sparring.
South Brent:
Sion Park: entered junior high kick and junior white belt
patterns.
Joseff Park: entered junior high kick.
Dartmouth:
Georgie Chadfield: Bronze, junior white belt patterns.
Jordan
Thorpe: entered Little PUMA™ patterns and high
kick
The following day South Hams students also attended the
coloured belt grading held in Totnes. Chief Examiner, Master
Ray Gayle, 7 th Degree made the trip from Bristol to grade
the students from South Hams and Torbay.
Students were graded on technical ability, sparring, theory
and attitude. The students all performed well, with some
outstanding students achieving credits and grading awards.
